Rug size guide:
How to choose the perfect rug

Knowing how to choose the right rug size for your room can be a daunting task. Not only does it have to fit the style of the room, but it also needs to match your existing furniture and décor. With our rug size guide, you can find the perfect fit to add comfort and elegance to your home.

What are standard rug sizes?

Before jumping into choosing the right rug size, it’s helpful to have an overview of the standard rug sizes and where they’re usually placed. Below, we’ve laid out some of the most common options to choose from. But keep in mind that these may vary depending on the specific rug shape and type you choose.

  • 140 x 200 cm: These are great for slightly smaller spaces and can neatly unify a room around a seating area.
  • 160 x 230 cm: 160 x 230 rugs are both versatile and adaptable, fitting perfectly in various different areas.
  • 200 x 200 cm: These mid-size rugs fit neatly under a variety of furniture, from couches to dining tables.
  • 200 x 300 cm: If you have a slightly larger living room, a 200 x 300 rug can work well. Try placing it underneath a large couch or a standard double bed.
  • 250 x 350 cm: Choose a 250 x 350 rug for spacious living areas or to place underneath a king-size bed.
  • 300 x 400 cm: A large, 300 x 400 area rug will add a feeling of grandeur to any space — ideal for spacious living rooms, bedrooms or dining rooms.

Rug sizes for the bedroom

A plush and soft rug is the perfect way to create a warm and cozy atmosphere in the bedroom. As a bonus, bedroom rugs prevent your precious feet from touching the cold floor, making sure your wake up-routine doesn’t get an involuntary kickstart.

Smaller bedroom

With runner rugs, you can get that welcoming feeling of dipping your toes onto a cosy rug first thing in the morning without covering the whole floor. Place one runner on each side of your double bed, and make sure they’re long enough to cover the area where you’re most likely to put down your feet when getting out of bed.

Large bedroom

A spacious bedroom with a double bed might call for a larger rug. Place both the bed and any bedside tables entirely on an extra large rug to create an even border on all sides of the bed. Depending on the size of your bed, larger rugs with a length of 240 cm or more tend to work best here. Or, choose a slightly smaller rug and place around three-quarters of the bed onto it so that the edges of the bed are covered.

Single bed

For a smaller bedroom with a single bed, we recommend choosing a medium-sized rectangular rug. Position the rug approximately two-thirds under the bed, leaving a wide border for stepping onto. This placement adds warmth to the room and visually anchors the bed, creating a cohesive look.

Rug sizes for the living room

Use a living room rug to divide the room into areas for different activities and to tie a group of seating furniture together. Your living room rug sizes vary depending on the size of your room and furniture; for instance, a small rug in a large room might almost disappear. You can create a living room that fits your lifestyle by choosing rug measurements that fit the space.

Smaller living room

For a slightly smaller living room, pick a proportionally smaller rug size and create a coherent look by placing only the front legs of every piece of furniture in the grouping on the rug. A rectangular rug might work best for this, and this is also a great option if your sofa is placed against a wall since the space layout already groups the furniture. Medium rugs tend to work well here, typically those that are between 160 and 229 cm in length.

Large living room

If you have a spacious room with a generous sofa corner or an open-concept space with no seating furniture against a wall, you’ll get a balanced and cohesive look by placing all furniture entirely on a large rug. This will create a well-defined seating area, using the rug to tie the space together. Rugs used this way are typically between 230 and 349 cm long.

Reading nook

Divide your room into different areas based on activities to create space for all needs. You can use small rug to frame your armchair with a footstool or a small table into the cosiest reading nook. This option is also suitable for smaller living rooms without a big sofa. If this is the look you’re going for, choose a rug less than 160 cm long.

Rug sizes for the dining room

A flat-woven low pile rug under the dining table allows your chairs to slide in and out easily. To best frame the area, choose a dining room rug that mirrors the shape of your table.

Round table

Match the shape of the rug to the shape of your table; choose a round rug to create harmony if you have a similarly-shaped table. Make sure the diameter of the rug allows you to push back the chairs without leaving the rug.

Rectangular table

When choosing the right rug size for a dining room, you want to be able to fit the whole table and all the chairs on it. Ensure that the rug extends at least 50 cm behind the chairs so that you can pull them out without their legs getting caught on the edge of the rug. Creating this look usually requires a rug with a length of at least 240 cm, but this can vary depending on the size of your dining table.
